SOCIAL SCIENCE 3.0
The Social Science 3.0 Framework features a unit alignment guide, planning guides (K-10) that contain content foci, enduring understandings, and standards alignment, curriculum maps (K-10), and tool sets comprised of curriculum maps, unit plans, performance assessments, and scoring tools (K, 3rd, 7th, and 10th grades).

The Social Science 3.0 Framework was created by the Department of Literacy: Social Science Instruction in collaboration with teachers to provide Chicago Public Schools teachers with guidance on developing a rich social science curriculum. The adoption of the Common Core State Standards has led to shifts in education across disciplines to ensure that students acquire the literacies needed to become proficient within the discipline. This framework will provide a curricular guide that will support social science teachers in making the necessary adjustments to ensure that the skills embedded within those standards are addressed throughout the teaching and learning occurring in the social science classrooms. This framework is anchored through units that are focused around key themes and promote inquiry-based learning with an emphasis on developing discipline specific reading and writing skills . It is critical that students not only know the basics of our history and society – but that they are able to, and become excited about, engaging in the process of learning. Our students must be equipped with the skill sets that allow them to be able to be informed and active citizens within our society. To achieve this, the framework focuses on higher order thinking skills along with content and literacies in the social sciences, global connections, civic connections, and economic connections.
The Social Science 3.0 Framework will be enhanced in June
. Enhancements will include:
- Inquiry teaching that requires the use of multiple types
- Tool sets at each grade from K-10, resources (text, electronic, primary, and secondary) for every identified unit, and alignments with cultural and academic partners and their resources (i.e., The Chicago History Museum, the Du Sable Museum, the Chicago Debate Commission, the Art Institute, and News Literacy)
The aligned resources will allow teachers to ensure that the curriculum is taught through the use of a multitude of resources and the analysis of a variety of text types and complexities.
